Wine Show Season

September through to November each year is often known in our industry as the Wine Show season. The time when we send our wines off to be benchmarked against others. We hope to receive back a few awards, some medals and lots of constructive feedback on the wines we have entered.

Here at Vineyard 28 we are quite selective of which wine shows we enter. Not all wine shows are equal and suitable for our lesser known Italian Varieties. One show we always support though is our own local show, the Geographe and WA Alternative Wine Show held in September each year. This year we came home with a swag of Bronze medals for our wines, so although not an award or trophy, we got some great feedback.

Another great show we send our wines away to is the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show. This show has been going for 20 years now and is not only a forum for wines that fall outside the mainstream. It encourages cutting-edge judging procedures and provides a host of social and educational events that promote knowledge sharing and the ferment of ideas around lesser known grape varietals.

Mark Cumbers with the 2019 Dolcetto

Mark is very pleased to have received a Gold Medal, for the 2019 Dolcetto (dry) at this years Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show. It makes it two years in a row for this wine. (The 2018 Dolcetto winning Gold last year and then going onto to win the Best Italian Red Varietal Trophy) The 2019 Dolcetto would have been in the running for the trophy again, but this year a Sangiovese from De Bortoli came up tops.

Wine shows are a fickle thing, and sometimes you don’t get the results you hoped for, but it doesn’t mean the wine isn’t good enough. Consistently achieving medals indicates excellent quality wine with no faults. It provides us with an opportunity to see how we are going with our peers. But at the end of the day it really comes down to the individual, which wines you like to drink, and the characteristics and flavours you like in your wine.

As well known Spanish American Chef, Jose Andres states, “Every time I open a bottle of wine it is an amazing trip somewhere.

At Vineyard 28 we want our wines to take you on an amazing trip as well, hopefully on a little journey to experience something of Italy here in the Geographe Wine Region.

Best Italian Red Wine Variety Trophy

Vineyard 28 is awarded the Best Italian Red Wine Variety Trophy at the

2018 Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show.

The 2018 Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show is held during the first week of November each year in Mildura, Victoria. The 2018 Show saw 805 entries received from 207 exhibitors, from 62 wine regions across Australia, and encompassed 101 unique grape varieties. The show is more than a forum for wines that fall outside the mainstream. It encourages cutting-edge judging procedures and provides a host of social and educational events that promote the sharing of knowledge and ideas of the lesser known grapes.

Vineyard 28 is very please to announce that they were awarded the

Best Italian Red Wine Variety Trophy, sponsored by CHR Hansen,

for the 2018 Dolcetto.

This is the first vintage of this wine for Vineyard 28. Dolcetto is a black Italian grape variety, known for its low levels of acidity and tendency to be ready for an early harvest. This fruit is grown at the Wildwater Vineyard site in the hills behind Harvey. Full of flavours and vibrant with red berry fruit, sarsparilla, hints of rosewater, grainy herbs, cedar and spices, a wine that is drinking well whilst young and fresh.

Winemaker, Mark Cumbers was ‘over the moon‘ when he received the call to advise he’d received a Trophy for the Dolcetto. Thank you to our colleague Meg Kopke who was attending the Awards Long Lunch this year, and accepted the trophy on our behalf.  Receiving this Trophy is great recognition for being one of the Geographe Wine Region’s pioneers of the lesser known grape varieties.

Cellar Door is OPEN

Vineyard 28 cellar door reopens Saturday 6th February.Green Shoots after the fire at Vineyaard 28

As we advised the Western Australian Bush Fires (Waroona Harvey Fire) that commenced on 7th January 2016, came close to Vineyard 28, scarily close. Almost a month later and we are ready to re-open the cellar door.

Saturday 6th February 2016 our cellar door will be open from 10am.

Electricity has been restored, all the cleaning is done and we are ready to welcome you back to visiting us here at the cellar door. The surrounding bush is already showing signs of recovery and it is truly amazing to see the new green shoots appearing.

Jasper has missed all his friendly customers……..Green Shoots after the fire at Vineyaard 28

We’ve commenced vintage with the first harvest of the muscat grapes. Lots of testing will been done on all the grapes re possible smoke issues, and will continue throughout vintage. There is no “one” simple test for this matter, it is subject to many factors, e.g. what stage the grapes were at, their variety, how long they were under smoke and many more factors.

Please be assured we will only be making wine from those grapes that we are 100% confident about. Our fruit at the Wildwater Vineyard in Harvey was not exposed at all to smoke, and nor was the additional Sauvignon Blanc for our Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blend.

We are very appreciative of the support shown to us and especially, YOU – our lovely customers who have helped by ordering our wine online.

We look forward to having you visit at the cellar door and welcoming you back to our special part of the world.

Can’t wait remember we have online wine orders.

Taste of the Region

On Friday the 7th November, the Geographe celebrated recent success from the 2014 ANZ Geographe Wine Show, with a Taste of the Region, held at the Sky Bar at the newly renovated Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre. It was an opportunity for Trophy and Award winning wines from the show to be placed centre stage, and matched with local gourmet produce.

Vineyard 28’s “The Alternative”2014 Arneis was featured as part of this event, served alongside Donnybrook Marron- (Poached Marron, Pemberton Avocado & Lime Mousse, Passionfruit Dressing) and Avocado Watermelon- (Watermelon Cube, Pemberton Avocado & Lime Mousse, Pistachio Crumbed Harvey Persian Goats Cheese).

Our 2014 Arneis received the Doral Mineral Sands Award for Best WA Alternative White Variety at the 2014 ANZ Geographe Wine Show. Mark our winemaker was very pleased to have it selected for the Taste of the Region.

The Geographe Wine Region

The Geographe Wine Region is located just 2 hours south of Perth, and is fast earning a reputation as one of Western Australia’s most exciting new wine regions. Spanning from Harvey in the North to Busselton in the South and out to Donnybrook in the East, the region hugs the Geographe Bay with the cooling afternoon sea breezes being a hallmark of a long stable growing season. Whilst Geographe is one of Australia’s most geographically diverse regions, a common theme resonates across the region of smaller vineyards and wineries owned and operated by the families you meet at the cellar doors, Wine Shows and Exhibitions. The people behind the wine labels of Geographe are passionate and proud of their Region and what it produces and also where Geographe wines are placed in the Australian and world wine scene.

Vineyard 28 is one of Geographe’s small family owned and operated vineyards. When you visit us at the cellar door, most of the time you will meet us the owners, Mark & Pippa, the people behind the wine. We grow the varieties of wine grapes we are passionate about and enjoy making wine from for you. A love of all things Italian has blossomed into a particular interest in alternative wine varieties for Mark our winemaker and alongside our more traditional range.

Vineyard 28 has something for everyone, the cellar door is brimming with colour and vibrancy, warmth and passion, creativity and wine, quilts and art all combine here.
