Vineyard 28 Arneis 2015 – GEOGRAPHE wine region

Wine from between the ocean and the Scarp

GEOGRAPHE wine region lives in the shadow of Margaret River, but it produces some great wines of its own and deserves to be better known.

The region stretches from Harvey in the South and inland to Donnybrook. It includes the City of Bunbury, and the Ferguson Valley. The region hugs Geographe Bay with the cooling afternoon sea breezes being a hallmark of a long stable growing season. Many of the Geographe vineyards were planted in the late 90’s and are now well established and producing wine of consistent high quality. The region excels at Chardonnay and Shiraz, with excellent Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc.

Lesser known as varieties from Italy and Spain are also making a name for themselves – grapes such as Arneis, Vermentino, Tempranillo, Durif and Nebiolo to name a few.

Vineyard 28 Arneis 2015

Vineyard 28 Arneis 2015 is pale yellow straw colour with aromatic bouquet pronounced floral character and luscious crisp mouthfeel. Arneis is a white Italian variety of grape rarely grown in WA partly because it is considered difficult to grow. Vineyard 28 has the source block of this variety. RRP $22

Cellar Talk by Ray Jordan
Wine of the Week
Vineyard 28 the Alternative Arneis 2014 ($22)
If you are travelling around this summer, then the five wines I have listed this week are worth checking out at the various wineries. Vineyard 28 is a little between Mandurah and Harvey doing some good thing with this Piedmont variety. I like the crunchy, lively mouth feel here. Stacks of pear and spice with citrusy edge to it. The palate is deep and lightly textured with plenty of sustained flavour. The acid creates a clean, crisp finish. Nice current drinking wine. Go to vineyard28.com .au. 92/100

The Geographe Wine Region – Taste of the Region

Taste of the Region

On Friday the 7th November, the Geographe celebrated recent success from the 2014 ANZ Geographe Wine Show, with a Taste of the Region, held at the Sky Bar at the newly renovated Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre. It was an opportunity for Trophy and Award winning wines from the show to be placed centre stage, and matched with local gourmet produce.

Vineyard 28’s “The Alternative” 2014 Arneis

Vineyard 28’s “The Alternative”2014 Arneis was featured as part of this event, served alongside Donnybrook Marron- (Poached Marron, Pemberton Avocado & Lime Mousse, Passionfruit Dressing) and Avocado Watermelon- (Watermelon Cube, Pemberton Avocado & Lime Mousse, Pistachio Crumbed Harvey Persian Goats Cheese).

Our 2014 Arneis received the Doral Mineral Sands Award for Best WA Alternative White Variety at the 2014 ANZ Geographe Wine Show. Mark our winemaker was very pleased to have it selected for the Taste of the Region.

The Geographe Wine Region

The Geographe Wine Region is located just 2 hours south of Perth, and is fast earning a reputation as one of Western Australia’s most exciting new wine regions. Spanning from Harvey in the North to Busselton in the South and out to Donnybrook in the East, the region hugs the Geographe Bay with the cooling afternoon sea breezes being a hallmark of a long stable growing season. Whilst Geographe is one of Australia’s most geographically diverse regions, a common theme resonates across the region of smaller vineyards and wineries owned and operated by the families you meet at the cellar doors, Wine Shows and Exhibitions. The people behind the wine labels of Geographe are passionate and proud of their Region and what it produces and also where Geographe wines are placed in the Australian and world wine scene.

Vineyard 28 is one of Geographe’s small family owned and operated vineyards. When you visit us at the cellar door, most of the time you will meet us the owners, Mark & Pippa, the people behind the wine. We grow the varieties of wine grapes we are passionate about and enjoy making wine from for you. A love of all things Italian has blossomed into a particular interest in alternative wine varieties for Mark our winemaker and alongside our more traditional range.

Vineyard 28 has something for everyone, the cellar door is brimming with colour and vibrancy, warmth and passion, creativity and wine, quilts and art all combine here.

2014 Vintage at Vineyard 28, has begun.

2014 Vintage has begun at Vineyard 28.

Moscato is first

The first grapes to be picked were
….. Muscat Petit a Grain all destined for the 2014 Moscato, which we know many wil be waiting for.

Winemaker Mark is very happy with the grapes, crushing is underway.

Next was Arnies

And vintage is rolling along out here at Vineyard 28.

Dawn start for the trusty picking crew to beat the heat and bring in the 2014 Arneis.

Mid morning after the early start the Arneis is in. Crushing commenced and onto the press.
The workers managed to cope with morning tea of Raspberry Muffins and Choc Chip biscuits.

All looking very good. Beautiful cool morning.

Followed by Sav Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc pick this morning – absolutely beautiful morning
– just a lovely temperature and a gentle breeze to keep us cool as the sun warmed up.

2014 Dolcetto is picked

Another week begins and here at Vineyard 28 we start it with the harvest of the 2014 Dolcetto.
All picked and now on skins for the next 24-40 hours before being pressed.

Go to our facebook page for more update on the 2014 Vintage at Vineyard 28.

2013 Arneis now available

Award wining 2013 Arneis is now available for purchase.
The 2013 Arneis was awarded a Silver Medal at the 2013 Geographe Wine Show.

Picked February 2013, The Arneis is pressed within 2 hours of harvest. The juice settles then it is racked after 36 hours. The wine is then fermented for 21 days and was then left on lees for 2 weeks before wine was racked again. The wine was then further fined, cold stabilised and bottled in July. Pale yellow straw colour, with an aromatic bouquet. Intense and rich palate with nutty overtones makes a wonderful full bodied wine.

Here is what Scoop Magazine had to say about the newly released 2013 Arneis

Vineyard 28 ‘The Alternative’ Arneis, Harvey 2013
Quality is on the rise in Geographe, particularly with alternative varietals.
Arneis is a textured, often white-spiced, nutty white grape variety from Piedmont, Italy.
Here in WA it delivers all that, with more peaches and mandarins, and plenty of freshness.
Drink by pool or sea.
